A community radio station has secured a 10-year extension to its broadcasting licence.

Unity 101 Community Radio in Southampton will now remain on air until at least December 2035.

The station has served the city’s Asian and ethnic communities for almost 20 years, delivering a mix of cultural programming, multilingual content, and local news.

Ram Kalyan, station manager and founder, said: "These moments remind us what’s possible when people work together with a shared goal.

"Everything we’ve achieved comes from the dedication of our volunteers.

"They are the reason Unity 101 continues to grow and thrive."

Unity 101 was one of the first stations in the UK to be awarded a community radio licence in 2005.

All of its presenters are volunteers from Southampton’s diverse communities.

They receive in-house media training to help them produce content that entertains, educates, and informs listeners in ways not typically found on commercial radio.

The station also works beyond broadcasting, supporting events, festivals, and outreach programmes.

Ofcom describes community radio stations as providing "a new voice for hundreds of local communities across the UK."

The regulator also highlights the stations' focus on "mostly locally-produced content."
