Seven graphic design students have been shortlisted for a national design award.

Final-year students from Solent University in Southampton have made the shortlist for the Starpack Students competition, a national scheme that tasks emerging designers with developing packaging solutions for real-world industry briefs.

Chris Venables, senior lecturer in visual communication at Solent University, said: "Solent is committed to identifying platforms that allow students to showcase their work to future employers.

"The Starpack Student Awards are an excellent opportunity for students to present their innovative ideas and solutions to an industry that is looking for rising stars.

"They have worked so hard on their submissions – which not only included surface design, but also materials and the manufacturing process.

"We wish them all good luck at the award ceremony later this month."

The shortlisted students are Toby Lucas, Lily Waldron-Cooper, Poppy Wilson-Smith, Louis Ross, Luzy Hilger, Anna Demirgil, and Cara Knoy.

Entrants were challenged to design packaging that considered recyclability, customer appeal, environmental impact, responsible sourcing, and suitability for returns.

Lily Waldron-Cooper developed a metal biscuit tin concept for premium retailers, branding it 'Afternoon' and drawing inspiration from French carousels and macarons.

She said: "I am most proud of the 3D model itself, as it is evidence of many hours of research, patience, and having faith in my own abilities.

"It was a fun learning experience that I am very grateful for."

Toby Lucas designed e-commerce packaging for an online-only fashion brand.

He said: "My concept involved designing a sleek, minimalist box made from recycled materials sourced through a partnership with a recycling organisation – making it both sustainable and cost-effective.

"The biggest challenge was tackling the structural and material elements of packaging – as a graphic design student, it pushed me beyond just visuals."

Toby Lucas said the experience has boosted his confidence.

He said: "Being shortlisted has given me confidence and will help me get my work noticed.

"To know that my project stood out among other entries is honestly amazing and has motivated me to keep pushing forward and have confidence in my work."

The winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Barbican on July 2.
