A main road on the outskirts of Wootton on the Isle of Wight, which was due to be closed for another ten days, has reopened ahead of schedule.

As previously reported, part of Briddlesford Road has been shut for Southern Gas Network (SGN) repairs.

Works coincided with closures on the nearby Lushington Hill, and other roads in and around Wootton.

Temporary traffic lights have also been erected on Station Road.

The combination of works has contributed to major traffic congestion in the area.

Briddlesford was expected to remain shut until at least June 16, however much to the relief of drivers, it unexpectedly reopened yesterday morning (Thursday).

SGN has confirmed to the County Press that additional resource was 'drafted in', enabling the road to reopen ahead of schedule.

The road is not expected to closed again while the remainder of the works are carried out.

Dan Brown, spokesperson for gas company SGN, said: "To ensure everyone’s safety, Briddlesford Road was shut while we carried out the initial part of our engineering operation.

"This phase of work requiring the closure has been completed ahead of schedule, and motorists can now safely pass our work area.

"We appreciate roadworks can be frustrating for the local community, but this work is essential to keeping nearby homes and businesses safe and warm.

"Hopefully, reopening this road will alleviate some of the traffic congestion experienced in the area recently."
