A school is closed until further notice due to a mass power outage, affecting more than 700 homes.

Valentine Primary School in Sholing has asked for “no children to attend the school,” having also been affected by the power cut that’s left homes without electricity in parts of Sholing, Old Netley, and Lowford.

The school, situated on Valentine Avenue, said it would update parents and carers by 10.30am and apologised for the inconvenience caused.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Valentine Primary School said: “The school is affected by a current power outage, due to this can we please ask no children attend the school until we have an update from the power company.

“We will update you all by 10.30am as to the next plan (sooner if power returns before this). Sorry for any inconvenience this causes.”

The school went on to confirm that pre-planned Year 6 trips would go ahead as planned.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) confirmed that more than 700 homes had been affected by the mass power outage in the city.

Having first received reports of the power cut shortly before 6.30am (Friday, June 6), engineers have since attended the affected area to restore power by 10.30am.

In a statement, a spokesperson for SSEN said: “We're aware of a power cut in the area, affecting 726 homes.

"This unplanned fault is affecting the local area, and it's likely several streets will be affected by the same power cut.

"We are in the process of arranging for engineers to investigate the issue and restore the power.

"We aim to restore the power by 10.30am.

"The cause of the power cut is a fault on our underground network. This is the most common type of fault we see, and our teams are very experienced in dealing with these issues.

"In most cases, our engineers are able to get the power back on by replacing a fuse at the local substation. However, if the fault is severe, this may take us longer to fix."
