Many people in and around Eastleigh are isolated and fearful due to financial struggles, a charity has revealed.

Christians Against Poverty (CAP) shared this information in a new report, saying they want to help more people in Eastleigh improve their financial state.

The report, called No Time to Lose, highlights the significant effects of debt and poverty on individuals.

It shows that 85 per cent of people battling with debt feel isolated, and over 50 per cent are scared to leave their homes.

The report also focuses on the debt crisis in the South East, with new CAP clients owing an average of more than £12,500.

Many people have debts from multiple organisations, with almost half of these debts related to crucial bills like council tax, rent, and utilities.

Dan Brain, CAP's Eastleigh debt centre manager, said: "The financial pressures people face often go unseen, and as many are afraid to ask for help, they can isolate themselves from family and friends.

"CAP’s latest report highlights that low income and struggles with mental health are the two biggest reasons our clients are finding themselves in a debt crisis.

"Many people live on ridiculously low incomes, and when faced with increasing costs and other financial challenges, they can become trapped in a vicious cycle of uncontrollable debt, leaving them to feel ashamed and alone – only worsening their fear and anxieties."

The report also reveals that many people who come to CAP for help are often in a constant state of anxiety, with 78 per cent afraid to answer the phone, 82 per cent worried about opening post, and 62 per cent frightened of a knock at the door.

Dan continued: "Many people struggling with debt are forced into isolation because of fear and worry about their situation.

"Thankfully, we’re able to meet clients face-to-face and provide in-depth, bespoke support.

"We’re determined to help more people in Eastleigh who are struggling financially, and so we urge those who need support to get in touch – please don’t suffer alone."
