Further traffic disruption is anticipated on the Isle of Wight with the closure of a main road between Wootton and Newport.

Lushington Hill has been shut for works by Scottish and Southern Electricity Network (SSEN).

The road appears to be shut between its junctions with Palmers Road and Park Road, the latter of which has not long opened itself.

A diversion is in place via Station Road and Staplers.

Southern Vectis has said the road is set to be closed between 7am today until 6am on Saturday (June 7).

During the closure, all Route 9 buses will operate via Staplers Road and not Fairlee

Route 4 buses will not operate except for the 6.35am from Ryde to East Cowes and the 07:15 from East Cowes to Ryde (This bus will have to head in to Newport and then Staplers to reach Wootton & Ryde).

A spokesperson for the bus company said: "Any customers wanting to get to East Cowes from Ryde, will need to catch a Route 9 bus and then change on to a Route 5 bus in Newport bus station.

"Customers in East Cowes that need to get to Ryde, will need to catch a Route 5 bus and then change to a Route 9 bus in Newport bus station."

Meanwhile, the nearby Briddlesford Road is also shut for separate works.

Southern Gas Networks (SGN) engineers are replacing gas pipes along the route.

According to official traffic notices, Combley Road, Havenstreet, another potential diversion route, is also closed from 7.30pm this evening, for 'routine maintenance works' by Island Roads.

Drivers are already frustrated with recent roadworks disruption - in particular the Horsebridge Hill one-way system.
