Southampton's geothermal heating network is set to expand.
The Southampton Geothermal Heating Company, a partnership between the council and energy firm, is working with Star Energy to explore new opportunities.
The city has been a pioneer in geothermal district heating since 1986.
The combined heat and power facility currently serves more than 58 commercial and public sector customers, as well as hundreds of households.
It produces over 70GWh of energy per year, saving 11,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.
Lorna Fielker, leader of Southampton City Council, said: "Bring Energy, the council’s partner in the Southampton Geothermal Heating Company and the largest operator of UK heat networks, is working with Star Energy, experts in geothermal energy, to explore new opportunities for our district heating network."
The council says the heat network is used by the Civic Centre, West Quay Shopping Centre and Ikea.
It added: “They are one of the most cost-effective ways of reducing carbon emissions from heating, and their efficiency and carbon-saving potential increases as they grow and connect to each other.
"They provide a unique opportunity to exploit larger scale – and often lower cost – renewable and recovered heat sources that otherwise cannot be used.”
