Patrols of armed police at Southampton's cruise terminals have been increasing in recent weeks as the busy summer season approaches.

Being home to the UK's biggest cruise port, Southampton regularly sees multiple cruise ships arriving and departing each day throughout the summer.

Three ships have been docked in terminals today, the Oceania Vista, Fred Olsen Balmoral and P&O Britannia, which hold 1,200, 1,350 and 3,600 passengers respectively.

Starting now until October, armed and unarmed police officers will be conducting regular high-visibility patrols in order to assist terminal security during the busy period.

Officers will engage with the public, explain their presence, and provide reassurance while deterring potential offenders.

Police Sergeant Max Preston said: "These patrols are conducted every year during busy periods and we can assure you there is no reason to be concerned.

"They are just one way we are working to make sure people can go on holiday and come home safely.

"Southampton is a major international port with thousands of people coming in and out of the terminals during this busy period so it is important for us to provide a visible policing presence.

"Our hope is that by seeing us people will feel reassured that we are working hard to keep them safe."
