A Park Gate mother has told of her fury after discovering a cycle lane was being built in a dead-end road.

Southampton Road, Park Gate resident, Lynsey Turner, 49, said she was in disbelief when a cycle lane started to be installed outside her home on Monday, May 19.

She said: “I believe that this cycle lane is going to put children at serious risk – this road has no through traffic and worked well without a cycle lane.

“There has been absolutely no thought or common sense – the cycle lane is so close to our driveways we won’t even see the cyclist before pulling out.

“If this was a busy road I could understand – but its not.

“I have met with Hampshire Homes who say they are only doing what they have been told by the county council.”

Hampshire Homes have been approached by the Echo and managing director, Tom Moody, has explained it is only fulfilling its obligation to the council.

He said: “We are not the developer, but a contractor appointed to deliver the project on land adjacent to Southampton Road.

“During the application and on being granted planning, there was a detailed section 278 design which was approved by Hampshire Highways, without this no works would be carried out or started.

“Any design or rights of way are not in the control of Hampshire Homes and on approval by Hampshire Highways we appointed R&W Langley to construct the works under the guidance of the local authority’s.”

“We have tried to complain but have been forced to accept it – We have no line of sight when pulling off our driveways.

“I don’t know why HCC would do this.”

A Hampshire County Council spokesperson said: “In our capacity as the highway authority, we recommended that this cycle lane should be included in the planning application agreed by Fareham Borough Council.

“The cycle lane is designed to safely connect residents of the new housing development on A27 Southampton Road, including school children, to improved shared cycle and pedestrian routes linking to Park Gate shops, local schools and the railway station.

“It has been installed in line with the latest design and safety standards and will be closely monitored.”
