A new route from Southampton to Mexico via Dublin is set to launch.

Aer Lingus has announced its first flight to Cancún, Mexico, starting in January next year.

The new route will operate three times a week from Dublin, with connections available from nine UK airports, including Southampton.

This means that holidaymakers from Southampton will be able to fly to Cancún, via Dublin, with Aer Lingus.

Lynne Embleton, Aer Lingus chief executive officer, said: "Our new route to Cancún introduces a vibrant new destination to our network and further increases Aer Lingus’ winter sun offering.

"Our research highlights a strong appetite amongst customers for new travel experiences, particularly seasonal destinations beyond the peak summer period.

"Mexico, with its tropical climate, caters to the growing consumer demand for winter sun, while also offering a rich blend of history, culture, and cuisine."

The route will be serviced by the airline’s A330-300 aircraft.

Cancún is a popular destination for its warm weather, beaches, and cultural sites, including the Mayan ruins of El Rey, Ichkabal, Coba, Kohunlich, El Meco, Chichén Itzá, and Tulum.

The new route will allow travellers to explore these attractions and enjoy the local cuisine.

The new route will also provide an option for travellers from across Europe and the UK to connect in Dublin to Aer Lingus’ new Cancún route.

Other connecting UK airports include Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds Bradford, Liverpool, London Heathrow and Manchester.
