The actor and comedian Paul Whitehouse has revealed his favourite place to visit in Hampshire.

The 67-year-old is known for his work with Harry Enfield and The Fast Show, as well as the factual entertainment programme Mortimer and Whitehouse: Gone Fishing, along with Bob Mortimer.

Recently, Whitehouse was announced as being in the cast of the new HBO Harry Potter TV series, taking on the role of Argus Filch.

His reveal of his favourite place in Hampshire comes as part of Country Living’s feature on the favourite 'green and happy' spaces of UK celebrities.

The publication said: "For four decades, Country Living has celebrated the power of nature to nourish, soothe and restore us.

"So to celebrate our 40th birthday this year, we've asked 40 of our favourite country-loving friends to tell us about the gardens, woods, lakes and mountains that nurture their wellbeing."

Speaking with Country Living, Whitehouse shared that he adored the River Test, especially to enjoy fishing.

He explained: "Fishing gives you a different perspective. If you’re out walking, you pass through the countryside.

"When you’re fishing, you’re part of it. You’re immersed in the environment around you with all your senses, picking up signals.”

The River Test is famous for its trout fishing, according to Visit Hampshire, which starts "high on the chalk downs at Inkpen" before flowing into Southampton Water.

It adds: "The crystal-clear waters of the little streams, or bournes, are ideal for watercress growers and the numerous water meadows and tidal marshes are thick with wildlife, flora and fauna.

"Many wild birds and plants can be spotted along the River Test such as kingfishers, marsh harriers and litlle grebe, green-winged orchids and butterbur."

The River Test holds a special place in Whitehouse's heart, as shared in an interview last year with Country Living.

He had begun fishing at the age of five with his dad, doing it in the canal at Enfield before putting back whatever they had caught.

This activity gave him a good relationship with his father, as he shared: "Fishing gave me a very strong bond with my dad. Even if there were certain things we didn’t talk about, we always had that.

"As we got older, we spent a lot of time together we probably wouldn’t have if it weren’t for fishing."

It makes it or the more poignant that Whitehouse choice the River Test as the place to scatter his dad's ashes after his passing.

He shared: "But it’s the Test [in Hampshire] that is particularly special to me. It was the first place I took Bob [Mortimer] fishing and it’s where I scattered my dad’s ashes. It’s also a chalk stream."
