Though these images date from the 1990s, the Wickham Horse Fair possesses a remarkable history spanning nearly 800 years, establishing it as one of England's most ancient horse fairs.

Its origins trace back to 1269 when Roger de Scures, whose ancestor received the manor from King William, obtained a royal charter from King Henry III to hold a weekly market in Wickham.

This market eventually grew into the renowned fair.

For centuries, the Wickham Horse Fair has been a cornerstone for Romany and Traveller communities, who are thought to have participated since its 1269 beginnings, using it to trade horses, connect with loved ones, and celebrate their heritage.

While traditionally centred on horse sales, the fair evolved into a lively event with ribbon-adorned bareback horse parades and, at one time, prominent fortune-telling and other festivities.

Although horse trading continues, it's now a smaller component.

Today, the fair blends modern amusement rides with traditional horse parades, drawing a more diverse crowd.

The photographs referenced were all captured at the fair in the 1990s.
