A landlord and punters alike are thrilled with the transformation of their local pub into a 'state of the art' sports bar.

The Cricketers Arms in Woolston has undergone a major transformation as Marston's first ever 'Grandstand' sports pub.

It has been given a major facelift, including modern technology aimed at rivalling the stadium experience.

This includes new 3-metre-long and 1.8-metre-tall screens, with state-of-the-art sound systems, flexible tiered seating, and outdoor bars with screens.

The walls are also decorated with local sports memorabilia.

Landlord Phil Merriott, who was a psychiatric nurse for 23 years before becoming a publican, said: "I think it is brilliant. I love it. They have kept the charm of the building, and they have put all the up-to-date technology in.

"We could not be happier, and our customers love it.

"With the grandstand room, it is like standing in a stadium. Saints' match days, without a doubt, are going to be incredible.

"We feel quite privileged to be given the opportunity with this pub. You could not pick another place in Southampton for a pub that's better."

Phil adds that previously the pub relied on around 50 regulars, but says this refurb, particularly the addition of the food menu, will bring in new customers.

Former landlady turned regular of the Cricketers Arms, Mandy Lewis, is a fan of the makeover. She said: "It is in your blood, this pub.

"It is amazing. There have been five managers since I left, and these are the best they have had. They serve it (the refurbishment), worked hard for it."

Another regular, Lewis Stacey, said: "I have been drinking here for about seven years. It is a massive upgrade.

"I just looked through the food menu, looks really nice."

The Cricketers Arms will show all key sporting fixtures, including rugby, cricket, tennis, F1, darts and horse racing.

All draught beer will be available in two-pint cups, and locals will be able to enjoy 10 per cent off pre-match pints for one hour before kick-off.

Marston’s says it picked The Cricketer’s Arms as one of the first pubs to receive the Grandstand makeover, due to its involvement with local sports teams, community groups and charities.
