Cars could be seen freely crossing the Portswood Bus Gate as the controversial trial was suspended this morning.

The decision to suspend the controversial restrictions, which stopped any traffic other than buses, bicycles and taxis from using the road at peak times, follows a three-month review of the scheme and feedback from local residents and businesses.

Along with the suspension of the trial, its signs were also removed in the early hours.

This meant that a number of private cars, in addition to the usual taxis and buses, were using the road without fear of fines.

The scheme, which proved hugely unpopular with residents and businesses alike, was due to run as part of a trial for at least six months after beginning in January.

Any future reinstatement of the bus gate will only happen once a revised, community-backed plan is in place, Labour said, one that meets objectives for safer streets, cleaner air, and better public transport, without disadvantaging local neighbourhoods.
