A "heartbroken" family have been left with nothing after an electric car caught fire on their driveway before spreading to their home.

The blaze, which started in the early hours of May 9, spread to a van and the house on Charlecote Drive, Chandler's Ford.

Emily Jay, who lived in the house with her husband and two young children, has now started a fundraiser to help them rebuild their lives.

Writing on the fundraiser page, she said: "I never in a million years thought I would be doing this but here I am.

"On Friday, May 9, 2025, our lives changed forever.

"A devastating fire ruined our family home after our electric car caught fire on our driveway in the early hours of the morning while we were all sleeping."

She added: "Thankfully, my husband and I made it out safely with our two young children (aged two years old and seven months old) in our arms and our dog following behind us.

"We are so lucky we woke up in time and that we are all safe and got out alive.

"However, the loss of our home, our memories, and everything we have worked for has left us with nothing and absolutely heartbroken.

"Our home wasn’t just 'walls and a roof,' it was where we raised our beautiful children and created countless memories.

"Now, we are facing the reality of starting over.

"The costs of temporary housing, basic necessities for our children, clothing, and eventually rebuilding our home are way more than anything we can unfortunately manage alone.

"Your support, in any form, means the world to us. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your kindness, your prayers, and your help during this incredibly difficult time."

The fundraiser has so far raised more than £1,000, and can be found by searching Emily Jay on GoFundMe. It is titled: 'Help our fire damaged family home'.

A spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said: "Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters entered the property to extinguish the fire using hose reels and jets.

"Fortunately, there were no casualties involved.

"The electricity, gas, and water supply to the building was isolated before the incident was handed over to Hampshire and IOW Constabulary officers."
