Terrified residents fled their home as an electric car charging on their driveway burst into flames.

The G-Wiz electric car erupted at Charlecote Drive, Chandler's Ford - spreading to a van and badly damaging the detached property.

Charred remains of the vehicle were seen after the 5am blaze - with nearby neighbours having woken up to witness flames ripping through the home.

One neighbour said he was deeply concerned for the welfare of the residents fearing they were still in the property.

He said: "I heard two loud noises and a loud whoosh sound. I got out of bed, looked out of my window, and saw that my neighbour's e-car was on fire. It quickly spread to his van and then onto his house. It was so quick.

"We were just worried the neighbours hadn't got out, but they did. My wife was distraught because she thought they hadn't got out. It is so scary when it happens.

"The fire service did a magnificent job putting the fire out and keeping everyone safe.

"At the end of the day, the house can be rebuilt, but lives are far more important."

The area was cordoned off by police. Neighbours were evacuated from their homes for several hours.

Another neighbour said: "The fire was going when I got up, and the house was beginning to catch.

"Flames were coming out of the door and window. I was frightened for the young family."

A spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews from Eastleigh, Redbridge and St Mary’s were alerted shortly before 5am when multiple 999 calls were made into the HIWFRS Control Room reporting the blaze.

"Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters entered the property to extinguish the fire using hose reels and jets.

"Fortunately, there were no casualties involved.

"The electricity, gas and water supply to the building was isolated before the incident was handed over to Hampshire and IOW Constabulary officers."

The incident was over by 7.34am.
