TODAY, Romsey War Memorial Park held an emotional service that marked the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day.

At a small service, everyone paid homage, with the entirety of Romsey town centre decorated with bunting, honouring the momentous occasion.

Starting with a procession beginning at 10.30am in the town centre, Romsey Town Crier Terry Haymer kicked proceedings off with the VE Day cry, before heading to the memorial park for a two-minute silence and a service.

Mr Haymer, 81, said: “Eighty years is remarkable, isn’t it? Everyone comes together in the community to commemorate and remember the millions that gave so much for our freedom.”

Revered Thomas Wharton led the ceremony with an exhortation, shortly followed by the cannon fire and a two-minute silence. After that, there was a short speech from veteran Ivor Demain.

During the service, many tears and smiles were shared, as individuals young and old came together to celebrate the poignant event.

Allan Tiller, 86, said: “I have a vivid memory of all the adults where I used to live, in the street, and I was a little boy. I always remember running in and out of the ladies’ dresses. That’s an image I’ve always had, and I realise that must’ve been VE Day.

"Today’s ceremony is simple, but it’s enough; we must remember it. I was anxious to make it here today, so I’m glad I could come."

Towards the end of the service, Mayor of Romsey John Parker paid his respects and laid a wreath, alongside the veterans, next to the memorial statue.

Names of those lost but not inscribed on the statue were also read out in solidarity.

Ruth Powell, 70, from Southampton, said: “It’s really nicely put together, and quite emotional actually. My uncle passed in 1942. I never met him, but I feel it every time. It’s a lovely little service.

“We must keep the memories and legacy alive, especially for the younger generations. They should all honour it. We will definitely come again next year.”
