Hundreds of thousands of passengers use Southampton Airport each year, and some might be interested to know what the liquid restrictions are for hand luggage.
The current liquid rules were implemented in 2006 to prevent those with hostile intent from carrying explosive liquids onto planes.
The rule was partially scrapped in the summer of 2024 after the installation of specialised scanners at some airports across the country.
Southampton Airport announced back in February that it would be installing Next Generation Security Checkpoint (NGSC) scanners.
These scanners will allow passengers to keep electronic devices, such as laptops, in their hand baggage during screening.
However, will it impact liquid restrictions in hand luggage?
Does the 100ml liquid rule still apply at Southampton Airport?
The restrictions on liquids in hand luggage still apply at Southampton Airport, with these needing to be stored in 100ml or less containers to be allowed on flights.
While the 100ml liquid restriction was initially lifted for airports with NGSC installed, the ban was temporarily reintroduced in June 2024 due to technical issues, and has not yet been lifted.
According to the Southampton Airport website, liquids must be presented for screening in a single bag which is:
- Transparent and resealable
- No larger than 20cm x 20cm (8in x 8in)
- Able to close comfortably with all the items inside
- Only one bag of liquids is permitted per passenger
There are a small number of exceptions for the liquid restrictions which are:
- Baby food or baby milk - Passengers are asked to carry only what they need for their journey. Additional tests may be conducted.

- Duty Free Liquids - Purchased at an EU Airport or on board a flight operated by an EU registered airline that are accompanied by the original receipt and are carried in a sealed unopened Security Tamper Evidence Bag.
Overall, restrictions apply to liquids, creams, gels, pastes, including bottled drinks, food products, lotions, fragrances, cosmetics and toiletries.
