Boats across Southampton's docks sounded their horns this morning to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

Vessels and port users were encouraged to use their whistles at 9am as part of the town crier's special proclamation for the day.

A notice was sent out to all mariners in Southampton from ABP to use their horns, when safe and appropriate, at both 9am and 9pm today.

The 9pm sounding is to celebrate a special beacon lighting event taking place at Holyrood Church tonight.

The local notice to mariners from ABP said: "ABP strongly supports the making of this occasion and encourages as many vessels and port users to participate as possible."

The document also said that all ABP vessels will also be flying the ABP flag when appropriate.

VE Day's 80th anniversary is being celebrated with street parties and events across Southampton today.
