A petition in support of a controversial traffic scheme in Portswood has reached more than 150 signatures despite some residents saying they are ‘beyond appalled’ the council has not yet scrapped the project.
The Portswood bus gate trial has been surrounded by controversy and debate since it was launched in January.
In the months since, Southampton City Council received the largest petition in its history – with 5,528 people penning a petition asking the council to scrap the bus gate trail.
Despite these mammoth figures, 152 people have signed a petition in support of the scheme.
The petition states: “This petition is to express our support for the continuation of the current bus gate and pedestrianisation trial.
“It is crucial to recognise that vocal opposition can sometimes create the impression that the opposing viewpoint represents the majority.
“In reality, many people support changes that improve the environment and quality of life, but may feel hesitant to speak out when faced with loud opposition.
“By continuing this trial, we can allow a fair assessment of its benefits without being swayed by those who are vocally opposed.”

But some residents have expressed their shock that the bus gate has received any support from residents.
Brookvale Road resident, Michael Mace, said: “I’m staggered people are still trying to justify the scheme.
“I’m beyond appalled that SCC has still not scrapped the scheme due to the constant near misses that happened.
“School children knocked down, cyclists put in danger and hours of swearing and horn honking outside our homes has made life a misery since the council put the scheme in place.
“We have a scout hut, many school children and elderly leaving the church – all of which are being put at risk.
“I think 150 signatures is a feeble response – particularly compared to the more than 5,500 that have signed the petition in support of the scheme being scrapped.
“Brookvale Road is a residential street – now its being used like an A road. The outside of my home is caked in black from all the cars now coming up here.”
