An appeal has been lodged after plans to build a one-bedroom bungalow beside an existing home were thrown out.
New Forest District Council rejected an application relating to 2 Cranbrook Cottages at Southampton Road in Hythe.
But the applicants are hoping a government-appointed planning inspector will quash the council's decision.
A report to councillors said: "The application proposes the subdivision of the site, including the removal of two existing outbuildings situated on land to the rear of the existing dwelling.
"The proposed new dwelling would be situated in close proximity to the north-eastern boundary of the plot.
"The neighbouring property adjacent to the site is situated close to this boundary, and this would result in a very tight and awkward relationship between the two dwellings."
The report also said the position of the bungalow meant it would be unduly prominent in the street scene.
It added: "The relatively blank frontage and the proposed hard surfacing would result in a development with a somewhat austere appearance."
