A man arrested at Southampton Docks following the death of a man on a cruise ship continues to be questioned by detectives.

Hampshire police launched a murder investigation after a 60-year-old man had died following an altercation onboard the MSC Virtuosa on Saturday.

As the cruise ship arrived back in Southampton on Monday morning, officers descended on the docks and arrested a 57-year-old man from Exeter on suspicion of murder.

The ship had returned to the south coast city after leaving on Saturday for a two-day cruise to Belgium.

Hampshire Constabulary confirmed the victim’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Anyone with information surrounding the circumstances of the incident are urged to contact Hampshire Constabulary.  

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Gillooly, the senior investigating officer, added: “We want to reassure you that this appears to be an isolated incident on-board, and we want to thank the crew for their cooperation and assistance with our enquiries.
