A FIRE-DAMAGED Romsey landmark will take another step on the road to recovery to celebrate VE Day 80.

King John's House, which was gutted by fire in late February, said its gardens would re-open to the public for an event it is hosting for VE Day on Monday, May 5.

She said: "Dehumidifiers have been installed and are working to remove moisture in King John’s House.

"Water was used to extinguish the fire and an important first part of restoring the building is removing excess moisture from the air inside. Levels of humidity are being monitored with sensors, and fans are circulating the air.

"The water extracted from the process is fed via a tube to the outside and we are looking at a way to possibly extend that tube so that the slow drip of condensed water can be used to water some of the plants outside."
