A new pop-up shop selling waffles, milkshakes and smoothies to raise money for charity has opened in Winchester

Events management students from Eastleigh College unveiled their new pop-up shop ‘Project 13’ on the second floor of The Brooks shopping Centre on Thursday, May 1, in aid of charity Naomi House and Jacksplace.

Inside the shop, students will be selling waffles, milkshakes and smoothies with a wide variety of flavours every Wednesday to Friday from 9.30am until 5.00pm from May 7 until May 23.

Inside the new shopInside the new shop (Image: Daniel Quina-Brito) Gemma Braybrook, a lecturer in Media, Marketing and Event Management, at Eastleigh College, said: “Project 13 is named after Unit 13, which is a mini dissertation that the students do before they leave. We wanted to make it practical for them.

“They are starting up a business from scratch, bringing it to fruition and to see where it is right now feels incredible, it’s the reason why I love doing what I do. I am incredibly proud of every one of them.”

Every event run by the college is used as a means to raise money for charities, and the pop-up shop will raise money for Naomi’s House and Jacksplace. Within a week last year, the students raised just over £750 by running a coffee and cake fundraiser

Phoebe McCormack, the event leader (Image: Daniel Quina-Brito) The idea came from a project and enterprise ‘competition’ held at the college, where the winning group were awarded the opportunity to put their vision into practice.

Student and event leader Phoebe McCormack said: “It’s surreal every time I think about it too much it really scares me.

“We’ve had so much support and no matter how stressful it was, we have been supported the whole way through, and it’s really great to have this opportunity.”

Brooklyn King-Fraser outside the pop-up shop (Image: Daniel Quina-Brito) Fellow student and organiser, Brooklyn King-Fraser added: “I’ve really enjoyed this course so far.

“As someone who wants to be an entrepreneur in the future this has given me the tools and it’s like a mini game for me to start and give me experience of learning how it works starting up a business or event.”

King-Fraser also saw this as a chance to make history and grow the reputation of the college within Hampshire.

He said: “We want to show we are one of the biggest contenders within Hampshire and that we are one of the best schools around. Starting pop-up shops like this in a different place from our college is the start of that.”
