Two Isle of Wight paramedics have lost 19 stone between them after going through a weight loss journey.

Kerry, a student paramedic, and Iain, an operation station manager, embarked on the challenge as a commitment to their wellbeing.

Kerry, who previously turned to food for comfort during long nights on the frontline, gained nearly four stone over four years.

But since starting her weight loss drive, she started to use tools to help her, realising that if she kept putting herself last, she wouldn't be able to continue the job she loved.

Since the beginning of her journey, she has lost six stone.

She said: "I swapped takeaways for home-cooked meals that were prepared in advance and added simple exercise into my weekly routine.

"It didn’t feel like much at the time, but those small changes really added up.

"I feel lighter, sharper on shift, more present in life - I sleep better, I’m calmer under pressure, and I’ve realised that taking care of your health isn’t selfish, it’s a form of strength."

Iain joined the ambulance service 15 years ago and began to struggle with the job's emotional toll, affecting his mental health and weight.

He was referred to a weight management team to receive nutritional advice and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), helping him understand emotional triggers linked to overeating.

After a year, he weighed 29 stone and 12 pounds, and was referred to hospital for bariatric surgery.

He said: "Since the surgery, I’ve lost nearly 13 stone.

I‘ve gone from getting out of breath climbing stairs and suffering from back and joint pain, to now regularly playing first-team rugby for my local club.

"I’ve rediscovered my love for rock climbing, cycling and walking - I feel fitter, healthier, and happier, both physically and mentally."

Iain said that his weight loss has allowed him to cope better with the demands of his job and be more confident.

For those who want to start their weight loss journey, Kerry suggests focusing on their personal goal and not the opinions of others.

She said: "Taking time to care for ourselves has helped us feel more comfortable and confident in every area of our lives."
