A cruise ship that docks in Southampton has been given a hygiene rating by the CDC.

The Norwegian Star, which sailed from Southampton on May 5 for a 12-night British Isles voyage, received a rating of 98, just two marks off a perfect score.

The CDC found several violations, including water dripping from a utility sink faucet and pooling on a preparation countertop.

It recommended that non-food-contact surfaces of equipment be kept free of an accumulation of dust, dirt, food residue, and other debris.

Another violation was a cracked deckhead above the coffee machine alcove, which created a rough and difficult-to-clean surface.

A spider was also found on the back bar bulkhead above the alcohol bottles.

The CDC recommended that the presence of insects, rodents, and other pests be effectively controlled.

The CDC's Vessel Sanitation Program helps the cruise industry prevent and control the spread of gastrointestinal illnesses on cruise ships.
