A Southampton-based marine engineering firm has helped to refurbish a cruise ship.

SMS Group supported the AIDAdiva during her seven-week refit programme in Marseille, France.

This was the first refurbishment of the fleet-wide ‘Evolution’ programme.

The modernisation of the 252m-long vessel, capable of carrying up to 2,050 passengers, included the installation of new technology, upgrades to staterooms, and the expansion of entertainment areas.

Almost 100 skilled personnel from the SMS Group were involved in the project.

They worked on joinery, decoration, galley installation, tiling, HVAC, and electrical fittings.

This enabled the creation of three new public areas and the renovation of two others.

David McCarthy, operations director at SMS Group, said: "Despite the scale of the programme and complexity of works, I’m delighted that we rose to the challenge and delivered these signature venues for AIDA.

"The dedication and collaboration between our trusted partners and client undoubtedly led to its success.

"Big thanks to both."

The refurbishment included a complete strip-out and rebuild of the French Kiss, East Fusion, and Tokyo Bar on the AIDAdiva.

The bars and restaurants received new buffet stations, service counter lines, waiter stations, and hand-wash stations.

The spaces were further enhanced by a reconfiguration of the HVAC and fire prevention systems, a full electrical upgrade of lighting systems, and the installation of decorative lighting.

The Ocean Club Bar and Game Centre were completely redecorated, featuring custom wall finishes, a deckhead respray, new mirrored bulkhead sections, a raised deck extension, and new resin floors.

Bespoke furniture and banquette seating were also added.

SMS Group, with its headquarters in the Western Docks, operates from eight locations in the UK and one in Tampa, Florida.

Dan Lockyer, director of outfit at SMS Group, said: "Our newly expanded team and enhanced capabilities allow us to deliver projects of this scale; as we continue to grow, our focus will remain on projects of significant scope.

"It’s been a pleasure to work with the AIDA Team - at every level, they’ve been great."

The AIDAdiva is the Sphinx-class cruise ship of AIDA Cruises.
