A mosaic symbolising the Hulk has been restored by an artist in Southampton after going “missing in action” during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Will Rosie – affectionately known as Mr Mosaic in the city for his distinctive mosaic designs of Mr Men and comic book characters – spent his Easter weekend reinstalling a mosaic of the Hulk in Castle Way, after his previous design was stolen in 2020.

“I started with Mr Men characters, but I wanted to capture a different audience,” said Will.

“I created a few superhero designs, and my original Hulk mosaic went missing in action during the pandemic in 2020, somebody obviously liked the look of it and decided to take him.

“I’ve been meaning to keep on top of a couple of the mosaics that need a bit of tender loving care.

“There’s a little lad called River, he’s eight-years-old, and he loves trying to find my work around the city with his dad, so together we reinstalled the Hulk mosaic on Castle Way with a frost proof tile, which has already had some great feedback.”

As well as reinstating his Hulk mosaic – showcasing the superhero’s green fist – Will also added a newly designed mosaic of Deadpool to the underpass on Portland Terrace, outside the Marlands Shopping Centre.

“I think a lot of people find the mosaics endearing,” said Will.

He added: “People come by and say hello; I think it puts a smile on people’s faces.

“There are people in the city centre who spend a lot of time on the streets, and I think they get to know the different mosaics but then there’s also different running groups who have really embraced the artwork and incorporate it as part of a trail.

“There’s something for everyone really, I think it adds a bit of colour to the city and hopefully it really does put smiles on people’s faces. People are discovering them all the time.”
