NINE animals have been killed on New Forest roads by vehicles speeding on the road, campaigners have said.
Campaign group New Forest Roads Awareness have published the figures of animals and livestock which have been killed and injured on a road in the national park so far this year, with the figure higher than at this stage last year.
According to the campaigners, six ponies have been killed in 2025, three ponies have been destroyed after being injured, and one injured.
The figures are higher than 2024 where two animals were killed during the same period.
The group said 2024 was the lowest accident figures in history.
The group is focused on reducing animal collisions and deaths on roads within the New Forest National Park by educating drivers and raising awareness about the risks.
A spokesperson said: “I am doing a breakdown now that hopefully will make encourage people to drive the New Forest Roads with respect for the Livestock that have the right of way. Drivers must pass them slow and wide. The speed limit is 40 mph, that is the law.”
The New Forest is one of the largest remaining areas of unenclosed land where commoners' cattle, ponies and donkeys roam throughout the open heath. The group is working with Hampshire police to enforce speed limits on road.
The spokesperson added: “I ask you all to help one way or the other, please don't let me go to another scene, where, as above in the photo I have to stand in the pony's blood.”
