Police in Southampton say it's "more important than ever" to know the rules around using an e-scooter on the roads.
Residents risk being stopped and prosecuted for using private e-scooters on public roads, Hampshire Constabulary said.
They could also have their e-scooter seized.
The warning comes as warmer weather is expected to encourage more people to ride e-scooters.
Southampton's coral-coloured Voi rental e-scooters are the only type of e-scooter that can be used legally on public roads and cycle paths.
Using privately owned e-scooters in public areas can lead to fines, penalty points, and confiscation.

The Voi rental e-scooters can be used on public roads and cycle paths, but not on motorways or pavements.
The key rules for using these rental e-scooters include holding a valid or provisional driving licence, having only one rider per scooter, following road legislation and in-app safety advice.
Insurance is included by the operator.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: "You’re subject to the same road legislation as any car - that includes no drink driving, speeding, or using a mobile while riding."
It is also strongly recommended that helmets be worn, that light or reflective clothing be worn, and that riders not be distracted or overloaded.
