A Somerset man is set to take on 12 marathons this year to raise funds for pancreatic cancer research.

Peter Dunlop, from Taunton, is gearing up for a marathon each month in 2025.

The challenge is in honour of his mother, Jane, who survived a year after her pancreatic cancer diagnosis.

Peter has already completed marathons in Pisa, Peterborough, and Wales.

The TCS London Marathon, where Pancreatic Cancer UK is the Charity of the Year, is next on his list.

The money he raises will go towards research into early detection of pancreatic cancer.

There are currently no screening programmes or early detection tests for this cancer, which is the deadliest common cancer in the UK.

More than half of those diagnosed die within three months.

Peter said: "I would put it down as one of the single worst days of my life, made worse by the fact that Robyn and I had just been offered full sponsorship to stay in New Zealand."

However, under two weeks later, Peter and his wife Robyn had uprooted their life in New Zealand to return to the UK to support Jane.

She weighed just six and a half stone at this time.

Jane was able to tolerate a chemotherapy regime, enabling her to go on one last holiday with her husband, a cruise to Pisa in September 2017.

Two weeks after they got back, Jane died on September 30, 2017, aged 63, just one year after diagnosis.

Peter decided to take on 12 marathons in a year to represent the 12 months Jane survived after her diagnosis.

Peter said: "When I got the email to say I had my place in the team, I was absolutely buzzing."

In addition to raising funds, Pancreatic Cancer UK hopes its TCS London Marathon campaign 'The Ultimate Test' will raise awareness of pancreatic cancer and its symptoms, which include back pain, indigestion, tummy pain, weight loss, and jaundice.

Diana Jupp, CEO at Pancreatic Cancer UK, said: "The magnitude of this opportunity cannot be overstated.

"We are so proud and incredibly grateful that Peter is not only taking this on for Pancreatic Cancer UK but 11 other marathons as well.

"We wish him the very best of luck for the many miles he’s undertaking in memory of his mum."
