Plans have been lodged to knock down a former builder's merchant site used since the 1950s to build a total of 16 living spaces.

Jewson previously occupied the site on Gosport Street in Lymington until it closed in July 2023, and now developers Colten Developments Ltd want to build nine houses and seven flats.

A terrace of five townhouses will front Gosport Street, with a standalone building of seven flats facing Cannon Street and another terrace of four townhouses next to it.

While the site was previously earmarked for commercial operation, documents lodged in the planning application suggest it is "no longer viable for a commercial operation" due to the "age and condition of the buildings".

It also argues that the demand for office development is "no longer relevant" due to changes in working patterns since the coronavirus pandemic.

The application was first submitted on March 31, with an updated application form lodged April 15.
