Two boys who met at their local cycling club are preparing for a 100-mile off-road challenge along the South Downs Way from Winchester to Eastbourne - and they’re taking their dads along for the ride.

Sotonia riders Theo, aged nine, his dad Dr Jamie Plumb, ten-year-old Reuben and his dad, Dan Lewis, will embark on the ride over three days from May 16 to raise funds for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. Dr Plumb has been flying and treating patients with the charity since 2019.

The team, who live close to each other in Chandler's Ford and North Baddesley, were inspired to raise money for the charity after Theo lost his grandpa following an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in 2023.

Part of his father’s research with the charity is focused on improving patient care for those who have suffered an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, with current stats indicating fewer than one-in-ten people in the UK survive.

The South Downs Way cycle is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, challenging climbs and picturesque views.

Dr Plumb said: “It will be really hard work and I am sure there will be some tears (probably from me or Dan!) It's a massive challenge for the boys. Mentally it will be tough, but I hope it's something that they will remember forever.

“I think the biggest challenge we could face would be rain – if it's wet it makes everything ten times harder and it could even risk us not making it.”

The group have already raised an incredible £2,087 and are aiming to hit £3,000 by the start of the race.

"I’m sure we will each face our own challenges over the three days, but it will be great to work through these together and hopefully reach the sea at Eastbourne and enjoy a well-deserved fish and chip supper on the beach!"

The funds raised will be split between the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Operation Airbase appeal and Research and Development programme, of which Dr Plumb is a key member.
