A petition has been launched to stop a controversial bus gate trial from being cut short.

The petition urges Southampton City Council to let the Portswood Bus Gate Trial run its full course to gather adequate data and assess the long-term benefits for everyone.

It states: "We believe in the importance of creating a more liveable, safer, and environmentally friendly space for our community."

SCC’s trial has divided opinion among Portswood residents with many claiming it has had a “devastating impact on the local community” and seen long tailbacks.

Introduced by the council in January, the scheme closed off part of Portswood Broadway to through-traffic, while buses, taxis, cyclists, and pedestrians are still permitted.

The trial scheme has proved controversial, with some local businesses and residents urging the council to end it early.

The petition in support of the trial continuing adds: "Firstly, the wider area has been suffering from horrific traffic violations for a long time now, and they had not been caused by the current trial, but highlighted by it.

"The responsibility for speed violations is on the drivers not abiding the law, and not on this, or any other, trial.

“In reality, many people support changes that improve the environment and quality of life, but may feel hesitant to speak out when faced with loud opposition.”

Southampton City Council has said all options will be considered at the end of the consultation period.

The trial is being monitored by the council to understand any impacts on traffic and movement on the Portswood Road as well as on the local economy and community.

A monthly report is also being published on the council website summarising any traffic changes during the trial.

The petition continues: “By continuing this trial, we can allow a fair assessment of its benefits without being swayed by those who are vocally opposed.

“We believe that a successful transformation of Portswood high street into a more pedestrian-friendly area is a crucial step toward creating a healthier, more sustainable, and vibrant city.”
