A toddler was found dead in her cot after becoming unwell just days after Christmas, an inquest has been told.

Amy Makey was discovered unresponsive in her cot by her mother in the early hours of December 29, 2022.

The tot, who lived at Highlands House with her mother and brother, had been suffering with a cough and flu-like symptoms in the days leading up to Christmas and was “lethargic” the night before she died.

The 999 call made on the morning of Amy’s death was played to the court, where her distressed mother Kelly Makey can be heard telling the operator: “She is not breathing at all.”

Amy was officially pronounced deceased at Southampton General Hospital at 7.35am that same morning.

Dr Russell Delaney, a Home Office registered forensic pathologist, gave evidence during the inquest into Amy’s death.

Speaking to assistant coroner Sarah Whitby at Winchester Coroners’ Court, Dr Delaney referred to the 999 call made by Ms Makey, during which she told the operator she was unable to carry out CPR due to the child's mouth not opening.

Dr Delaney said it was "very difficult to say when she died".

Amy had been feeling unwell since December 20, 2022, but had not been taken to see a doctor. Friends and family of Ms Makey suggesting she should, the inquest heard.
The coroner said it is uncertain whether or not this decision would have made a difference to the tragic outcome.

Dr Delaney said his examination found early indications of a lung infection.

He said: “Influenza A was detected in her heart and lungs, but there is no evidence to suggest this played a part in her death.

“RSV was also identified in her trachea.

“Our investigations did not identify a satisfactory cause of death, and the medical cause is given as unascertained”.

A narrative conclusion into Amy's death was given by Ms Whitby.
She said: “Amy died after a period of illness where no medical attention was sought.”
