A Basingstoke racing driver has started the season with a podium finish.

Aaron Morgan, a driver for Team BRIT, competed in round one of the Britcar Endurance Championship at Silverstone.

Team BRIT is the world's only competitive team of all-disabled racing drivers.

Aaron, who became paraplegic following a motocross accident at the age of 15, is paired with Fareham's Paul Fullick, a lower leg amputee after a motorbike crash.

The duo drive a McLaren 570S GT4 and rely on the team's hand control technology, allowing them to compete on equal terms with able-bodied drivers.

On Saturday, April 5, they took part in the morning qualifiers, securing a fourth position in their class ahead of two 45-minute races.

In the first race, Aaron and Paul charged from their fourth-place position and dominated their class, claiming a class win.

However, a penalty for a pit stop that was 0.3 seconds too quick demoted them to second place.

Aaron said: "In the early laps, I was right in the battle of the much larger grid, but contact midway through the stint made me spin.

"I thought at this point our chances in the race were over.

"However, a textbook pitstop and second stint from Paul saw us claim the class win at the chequered flag, but later demoted to second for a pitstop penalty as we were 0.3 seconds too fast."

In the second race, Paul had an incident on lap two, forcing their withdrawal from the race.

Paul was taken to hospital for precautionary checks but was later declared okay.

Aaron said: "Paul charged away from the line in race two and was right in the pack when an incident on lap two forced us to retire from the race.

"Paul was taken to hospital for precautionary checks but later declared okay.

"This was a huge relief for the whole team."

As they prepare for their next race on Saturday, May 3 at Silverstone, Aaron remains optimistic.

He said: "I’m so excited to see how this very competitive class develops through the season.

"Paul and I showed again that we are a strong driver pairing, consistently improving over a race weekend."
