Residents of a major Southampton road that was hit by seven weeks of council roadworks have said they believe the road is more dangerous than ever.
Those living on Bitterne Road East in Southampton were subject to a seven-week road closure that resulted in large queues across other areas of the city.
But just two days after the ‘improvement works’ were complete and the road reopened last Saturday, a crash took place at the Somerset Avenue junction - resulting in two people being injured.

Resident of more than 20-years, Otto Biro, 69, said: “It’s my opinion that they should have a traffic light at the Somerset Avenue junction as there were regular crashes there.
“Now the council have reduced the space on the road with a cycle lane - I think the road is now more dangerous than ever.
“The crossing is a good addition to the road but it’s too far away from that dangerous turning.
“We are just across the road from this cycle lane and despite all the lovely sunshine, I’m still yet to see somebody use it.”

As part of the works the council has installed new signalised crossing at Somerset Avenue, resurfacing sections of the road, added drainage upgrades on Commercial Street and Somerset Avenue, and added a cycle lane.
The newly installed cycle lane (Image: NQ) Residents of the road for six years said: “We do like the new crossing that has been installed - everything else the council has done has been a complete waste of time and money.”
Another Bitterne Road East resident said: “After less than two days there was a crash – I thought the council were supposed to be making the road safer.
“They got rid of the middle lane on the Somerset Avenue turning and I just think its way more dangerous now.”
In response to the safety fears, a Southampton City Council spokesperson said: “As with all incidents on the road network, we will await the emergency services report before drawing any conclusions.
“The design for this scheme was within guidance and the Road Safety Audit highlighted no concerns.”
