Thousands of runners pounded the streets of Southampton today as the annual marathon returned to the city.

Now in its 10th year, the ABP Southampton Marathon returned with a bang this morning.

The sun was beating down on approximately 9,000 runners as they took part in the full and half marathons, 10k, and 5k races.

Organiser Chris Rees said it is "a joy to see the marathon return".

He said: "We’ve had more than 9000 runners take part in the marathon this year and each has brought a spectator or two meaning 20,000 people have descended in Southampton.

"The city is absolutely pumping."

Among those taking part in the 5k race were a vegan activist group, with several members dressed up as various animals.

A duck, pig, cow, and even a unicorn were seen setting off from the start line.

Visitors from across Southampton, the Isle of Wight, and further afield took part in the races.
