A popstar born in Southampton explained the influence the city has had on her music after the release of her new single.
Caity Baser has today released her new song “Running By Myself”, a bold track full of live guitars, piano, horns and choir, which has taken the 22-year-old in a new direction.
But having been raised on the south coast, the BRIT Award-nominated singer spoke about the influence music and theatre had on her life.
“I loved going to The Mayflower,” Caity said.
“That was a big thing for me and my family. Me and my mum, she would take me to shows.”

Caity explained that her family played a big role too, even if her mum was “tone deaf”.
“My family is very musical in the sense that they love music,” she said.
“Me and my brothers used to sing together, which is really cute, they’d play the guitar and I’d come and sing.”
She recalled sitting down one morning before school when her mum played “At Last” by Etta James.
“I was eating my Weetabix, the mini ones, I remember so clearly. I sat and thought what is this, this is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard in my life. It’s my favourite song to this day.
“I really, really love old music because it’s so simple and it makes you feel things. I remember being 10 and crying over Nat King Cole. I don’t even know what it means, but the chords, wow.”

“I’m excited to properly sing and just strip it back and impress people, I can’t wait,” she said.
“Most of the songs that I'm gonna be singing are very upbeat in their own right. They won't just be like piano forever.
“I just wanted to do one time round where it's just me and a piano, but yeah, I'm excited for people to see this new side of me. It’s who I am."
