Members of a Southampton union are taking to the streets as part of a nationwide campaign.

Unite's 'Unite Energy 4 All' campaign is happening today (Tuesday).

The campaign calls for the eradication of fuel poverty and the national control of energy resources.

Protest events across 40 UK locations highlight the struggle of eight million people to pay their energy bills.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: "No one should ever have to choose between heating and eating.

"We believe it is time for public ownership and for fuel poverty to be consigned to the dustbin of history."

Simon Coop, Unite’s national officer for energy and utilities, added: "OFGEM have failed to protect consumers.

"We stand in full support of the campaign against fuel poverty and for public ownership of our energy sector."

Unite is also campaigning for the reinstatement of the Winter Fuel Payment and a wealth tax to fund it.
