THINK Al Capone and Bugs Moran because Prohibition is coming but this time you will not need 'the Mob' to find a stiff drink.

Romsey wine bar After 5, owned and operated by Fleet Street veteran Carly Read, is offering a free cocktail with a twist inspired by bootleggers and speakeasies.

She said: "We're asking customers to follow us on our three social media platforms where a select few will receive a password for a free Tom Collins cocktail, just like the speakeasy days."

The No.5 Bell Street team: Owner Carly Read, 38, with baristas Callum Pilling, 23, Ellie Davies, 24 and Aidan McCarthy, 26 (Image: Charles Elliman) Southampton-born and bred, the former The Sun sub-editor said she was inspired by the "rich" culture of the Prohibition era, which lasted from 1920 to 1933.

Carly said: "[It was] a time when cocktail culture was born out of rebellion and I wanted to bring that sense of craftsmanship and excitement to Romsey, but with a modern twist.

"A Tom Collins is a great example of a cocktail that reflects the flavours and style of the Prohibition Era. During Prohibition, the production and sale of alcohol were banned but people still found ways to enjoy drinks in secret bars called 'Speakeasies'.

"Gin was a popular spirit during Prohibition because it was often easier to make illegally than Whiskey or other spirits."

The businesswoman, who is no stranger to illicit dealings, having helped break Matt Hancock's affair in Covid, said she has always had a fascination with the period.

She said: "I've always had a personal interest in the 1920s and Art Deco for their blend of cultural liberation, luxury and modernism, reflecting a time of social change, technological progress and the glamorous, rebellious spirit of Prohibition.

Carly, who previously spoke about No.5's independent spirit, was asked how it tied in with the themes she wanted to evoke from the 1920s.

She said: "Customers often compare our cosy, hidden space with a speakeasy, with its location tucked away on Bell Street. By combining classic elegance with a touch of rebellion, the speakeasy vibe offers guests a unique experience that celebrates both history and excitement.

"In a place like Romsey, known for its rich heritage, this concept provides a fresh, immersive dining experience that compliments the town's charm while offering something new and exciting for locals and visitors alike."

After 5 can be found at No.5 Bell Street, Romsey, which is also home to the coffee shop of the same name. The wine bar is open Fridays and Saturdays, from 5pm "until late."
