Residents of an assisted living block in Southampton have told of their fury after being left without a working lift - leaving residents trapped in their flats for days.

Those living at Potters Court on Wimpson Lane have said they feel the council have ‘dumped us here ready to die’ after they were left without a lift for more than a week.

Resident of Potters Court for more than three years, Sandy Johnson, 68, said: “some poor residents have not been able to get out of their flats for a week.

“That has mean many have missed doctors appointments or not been able to get out and grab a prescription.

“So many of us here use wheels chairs and the council have no plan in place for when the lifts break down – I’ve lost count of the amount of times the lift has broken down since I have been here.

“We want some lasting change from the council to stop residents being out through hell.”

Opposition and ward councillor for Millbrook, Cllr Jeremy Moulton said: "I had lots of concerned residents contact me - Potters Court has many residents with severe disabilities and both lifts being out of action has caused huge distress.

"Some residents have missed doctors or hospital appointments meaning they have to be rescheduled meaning prolonged suffering for them.

"I am assured that the new lift contractor has staff locally and their depot is in Northam. So if they can ensure the necessary spare parts are in stock then they are well placed to carry out quick repairs."

The council has apologised to residents for the inconvenience and said it will work to stop the issue happening again.

A Southampton City Council spokesperson said: “We are deeply sorry that the two lifts at our Potters Court housing with care scheme are out of action.

“Our team has been working closely with the lift maintenance contractor to fix the issue as quickly as possible. Our Housing team has visited every household to reassure residents of our support to them while the lifts aren’t working.

“We will continue to work with the lift contractor to resolve the current issue and find a solution to reduce the risk of this happening again."
