Shirley residents have called for more to be done to prevent E-scooters from being abandoned on the pavement.

There are five separate docking stations for Voi E-scooters and E-bikes on Shirley Road, however the volume of vehicles has seen the modes of transport abandoned near the docking stations, in the middle of public footpaths, rather than parked correctly back in designated spaces.

Sandeep Singh Babar, owner of Budget Pound Plus on Shirley High Street, said E-scooter parking is a “regular problem.”

Speaking to the Echo, he said: “One day everything is fine and the next day all the scooters and bikes are left in the middle of the road and it's difficult for people walking by.

“Sometimes I put the scooters back myself and I've seen people walking by do the same thing, but I think some people just don't care.

“I've been here six months, and a docking station has been outside the store all of that time.

“For me, it would make more sense if the scooters were either on the other side of the road, towards the back on the store in the car park, or even in Shirley Precinct – all of which have more room.”

Shirley and Freemantle Community Watch Forum founder and Shirley resident, Tony Weafer, said: “This has become more of an issue recently because now Voi have bikes as well as scooters, and the bikes are too big to fit in the docking station and stick out in the road.

“It’s certainly a problem when lots of people are walking by as you don’t want anyone to trip over, when many of the scooters are just left on the pavement.”

Southampton City Council has permission through a Department for Transport trial for an e-scooter hire scheme in the city, which is provided by Voi.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Voi said: “Inconsiderate parking is never acceptable.

“Whilst the vast majority of our E-scooter and E-bike riders in Southampton follow the rules, we issue fines and outright bans to those who repeatedly break them.

“Thousands of people choose E-scooters and E-bikes every day to get to work and education, and we want our service to work for everyone – whether customers or not.

“We always appreciate community feedback and will monitor compliance at Shirley Road over the coming months and take further action if necessary.”

A spokesperson for Southampton City Council added: “Voi monitors parking compliance and where issues are identified its on-street team will prioritise remedial action.

“Going forward we will work with Voi to monitor parking compliance at this bay and can make changes to improve compliance if required.”
