An ambulance has been taken out of service after being involved in a crash while responding to an emergency on blue lights.

The vehicle, crewed by two members of staff and a student paramedic, was involved in the crash on Platform Road just after 6.50am on Thursday.

Nobody was injured, and it was not transporting a patient at the time.

But the ambulance has had to be taken out of service due to the damage it sustained in the crash with the Volvo.

A spokesperson for South Central Ambulance Service said: "This was a collision just after 06:50 this morning between the ambulance and a car at the junction of Terminus Terrace with Canute Road/Platform Road whilst the vehicle was on blue lights on its way to an incident.

"Once the crew alerted control to the collision, we then sent a paramedic team leader in a rapid response car and an ambulance to the scene.

"The two members of staff, and one student paramedic, are uninjured but the vehicle has been taken out of service due to damage. The two occupants of the car are also uninjured and being taking home by Hampshire Police.

"The incident that the team were going to was then responded to by another ambulance crew."

Police confirmed that Central Bridge was temporarily closed earlier this morning as part of the response.

Traffic has built up in the area during the morning rush hour following the crash, with heavy delays on several roads and across the Itchen Bridge.
