Condolences have been shared with the family of a 12-day-old baby who tragically died at a Southampton tower block, as police end their investigation.

Neighbours at Millbrook Towers were left speechless after emergency services were called to the tower block on the morning of Saturday, January 6, 2024, following the sudden death of a baby.

The baby boy, who was born on Christmas Eve, was pronounced dead despite the best efforts of paramedics, including the air ambulance.

A 33-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man from Southampton were previously arrested on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of a child and neglect, but police have released both from investigation with no further action.

This brings the inquiry to an end.

Ward councillor Lee Whitbread has praised police for their dedication, his constituents for their "compassion", and shared condolences to the family.

He said: "I want to extend my deepest condolences to the family and all those affected by this heartbreaking loss. The death of such a young child is truly tragic.

"I would also like to express my sincere thanks to Hampshire Constabulary for their dedication and professionalism throughout this extensive investigation."

The baby’s death sent shockwaves through the community, with many leaving flowers outside the front door of the flat on Windermere Avenue.

Four bouquets, a note reading ‘Fly High Baby Boy’, two blue teddy bears and a candle were left outside a door.

Cllr Whitbread added: "The response from the local community, with heartfelt tributes left in memory of the baby, demonstrates the compassion and unity that brings us together in times of sorrow."
