A Southampton-based charity has unveiled a display of more than 100 3D printed hearts.

The collection, called the '3D Heart Cabinet', is showcased at University Hospital Southampton's Heartbeat Education Centre and is thought to be the only one of its kind in the world.

It was unveiled at an event last week attended by medical professionals, stakeholders, heart patients, and those affiliated with the Heartbeat charity.

Each model in the cabinet is an exact replica of a patient’s heart, crafted from detailed CT and MRI scans.

These state-of-the-art 3D-printed hearts provide surgeons with a tool to plan complex procedures with greater precision, reducing the need for invasive surgeries and improving patient care.

Mark Ind, Heartbeat CEO, said: "This cutting-edge display offers a fascinating insight into how 3D printing technology is enhancing cardiac surgery and embodies our mission to support pioneering advancements in cardiac care.

"Seeing firsthand how these 3D heart models will aid surgical planning and improve patient outcomes is truly inspiring.

"This is a significant step forward in ensuring the best possible care for those undergoing life-changing procedures."

The initiative was praised by Dr Tara Bharucha, consultant fetal and paediatric cardiologist at University Hospital Southampton.

She said: "The ability to examine an exact 3D replica of a patient’s heart before surgery allows us to plan procedures with an unprecedented level of accuracy.

"Ultimately, it leads to safer surgeries and better outcomes for our patients.

"This initiative is an incredible advancement in cardiac care and we are proud to show it off with this fantastic display at the Heartbeat Education Centre."

The event was also attended by Mr Nicola Viola, a consultant congenital cardiac surgeon.

He said: "These hearts are what we’ve been working for, for many years.

"They provide an opportunity to conceptualise and navigate complex cardiac conditions before entering the operating room—this is surgical training at its best."

The 3D heart cabinet symbolises a significant leap in cardiac care, aligning with Heartbeat's mission to pioneer advancements in this field.
