A "country chic" Hampshire spot has been named among the UK's poshest towns for a visit.

Stockbridge was featured alongside 14 others in a list from The Telegraph detailing the poshest spots for a mini-break.

The publication wrote: "Posh is a bit of a love-hate thing, isn’t it? Most of us, the lesser-privileged masses, nurture an envious dislike for those who get to live in a whirl of Michelin stars, Barbour jackets, cashmere, Krug and organic everything.

"But when it comes to a nice British mini-break? That’s exactly the world we want to inhabit, just for a weekend. We want towns that have comely high streets, shops we can’t afford, fancy bakeries, big, fat stately homes and a certain air of gentility."

Why is Stockbridge among the UK's poshest towns for a visit?

Stockbridge was praised by the Sunday Times for its beautiful scenery, great high street options and its fly-fishing club.

They wrote: "Ah Stockbridge. A few years ago, this pretty Hampshire town recorded the largest increase in houses selling for over £1million.

"It’s very country chic – but in a jolly lovely way. Think Dubarry boots, Fairfax & Favor, posh pubs, the fishing set.

"The latter love it for the River Test, a classic chalk stream; indeed, Stockbridge is home of the Houghton, England’s most-exclusive fly-fishing club, founded in 1822.

"Take a stroll along the river, or wander the high street of delis, butchers, bakers and country outfitters. For dinner, head to the Greyhound on the Test, Michelin Guide-rated modern British dining by the river."

Discussing a must-see place in the town, the publication recommended the nearby Leckford Estate.

They added: "This large estate grows for Waitrose, and has a farm shop, nursery, gardens, golf course and café."

Finally, if you're looking for a place to stay, The Grosvenor was highlighted.

It's said to be a "striking Georgian pile" which offers a "high-end yet relaxed vibe".

On the Visit Hampshire website, Stockbridge is said to have a "long and varied history" which "has inspired many poets over the years".

This is represented in a trail of 10 poems, set in stone, metal plaques and etched glass, which people can follow through the town centre.

They add: "Lying in the heart of Test Valley, the wide picturesque Stockbridge High Street reflects its early role as part of a drovers road where it was common to see flocks of sheep or herds of cattle being driven through the town on route from Wales. Seek out the Drovers House and you can still spot a sign in Welsh."

It was also highlighted for its "abundance of independent specialist shops" including tea rooms, a delicatessen and a traditional butchers.
