Southampton Solent University is launching a new online course in artificial intelligence (AI).

The Certificate in Practical Artificial Intelligence aims to give students the skills and knowledge to understand and apply AI in today's fast-changing tech world.

The course is open to all students, regardless of their main area of study, and is designed to fit around existing commitments, offering flexibility to those wanting to boost their understanding of AI and improve their future job prospects.

The announcement of the new course follows the recent £1.2 million renovation of the university’s computer labs.

Pro vice-chancellor for education, Sarah Jones, said: "We are excited to offer this cutting-edge AI qualification to both our students and staff.

"At Solent, we are placing a strong emphasis on equipping our community with the knowledge and skills to thrive in an ever-evolving employment landscape.

"This course is designed to be accessible, flexible, and highly relevant, giving participants the opportunity to gain a solid foundation in AI whilst enjoying the rest of their practice-led studies."

The course will cover a range of topics, including the fundamentals of AI, core AI concepts, AI technologies and industry applications, data in AI, generative AI, large language models, prompt engineering, and ethical and professional considerations.

It has been developed by Solent’s in-house academics who specialise in AI.

Solent is also partnering with IBM to give students the option to gain further digital badges.

While completing the new Solent qualification, participants will be invited to complete further complementary courses delivered by IBM at no extra cost.

John McNamara, IBM’s CSR for academia UK lead, said: "Embedding IBM SkillsBuild AI credentials at Solent University will doubtless support students in gaining the practical skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the rapidly evolving industry landscape."

All Solent staff are also being invited to complete the course.
