A major set of roadworks in the city are set to soon be completed - and Southampton City Council have earmarked a date.

The works on Bitterne Road East have been progressing well, according to the council, but have caused delays and disruption for Southampton drivers.

Included in the project is the widening of the existing crossing near Commercial Street, the construction of a new crossing near Somerset Avenue, and the installation of a new cycle path.

The cycle path will take cyclists off Bitterne Road East and over to Keynsham Road to use the newly designated route to Bitterne town centre.

Footpaths between Maybray King Way and the Bitterne Road East service road have also been widened, new lighting columns have been installed, and drainage has been repaired in key locations.

Councillor Eamonn Keogh, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "The works at Bitterne Road East have been progressing well with a significant proportion of the scheme now complete.

"We have kept in close communication with local residents and businesses throughout and have let them know that we’ve been working with Southern Water and the council’s trees team to deliver additional drainage works and tree maintenance while Bitterne Road East has been closed for these improvements, removing the need for future closures or lane restrictions on Bitterne Road East that would otherwise have been necessary to accomplish these tasks."

The council said that works are continuing on the north side of the carriageway, and the resurfacing of Bitterne Road East will need to be completed before it can be reopened to motorists.

New signage will also need to be installed, and the working of the two crossing points will need to be thoroughly tested over the next two weeks.

Many drivers and residents of Upper Deacon Road - which has taken on much of the diverted traffic - will be pleased to know the road is planned to be complete on time.

Cllr Keogh added: "While the resurfacing and relining works especially are subject to reasonable weather conditions, we are on target to complete this project, and the additional works, by the end of next week."
