A dramatic photo shows a car engulfed in black smoke after a blaze.
The large fire forced the closure of Portswood Road and a section of High Road on Friday morning.
Emergency services raced to the scene, as firefighters tackled the blaze and police officers closed the roads.
The incident caused delays, with people reporting slow traffic on approach to the scene.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: “We were called at 11.03am yesterday with reports of a car on fire in Portswood Road, near the junction with Harrison Road.
“Police attended to assist with road closures, however this was a fire service-led incident.”

Fire crews from St Mary's attended the scene, Hampshire Fire Service confirmed.
A spokesperson said: "Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a high pressure hose reel to extinguish the fire.
"The initial call came in at 11am and the stop message at just before 12pm."
This incident happened only two days after a van erupted into flames outside Westquay Shopping Centre.
The vehicle was carrying gas cannisters and a fireball was seen shooting into the sky on Wednesday morning.
According to the fire service, the blaze completely destroyed the vehicle and caused heat and smoke damage to the entrance of the Westquay car park.
